Petal Patch for the MQG

Last year I submitted a design for the Modern Quilt Guild's quilt of the month and was thrilled to find out it was accepted but with a catch.  The MQG was starting a new quarterly format with a common color palette.  I was thrilled to try out the new format and adjusted my design, here is Petal Patch:

Petal Patch - Heather Black

The MQG did an amazing job finding a fabulous photographer and stylist and were kind enough to allow me to use their images of Petal Patch from their new website, www.modernmonthly.com .

The color palette was a soft modern palette with tans, aquas, corals, grey and black.  Not my usual colors but it was nice to have a challenge and to try once again to make brown modern.  I wanted to use as much of the color palette as possible and I manged to use all but one color, the light coral.

What I love most about this quilt is the secondary pattern created by the two blocks in the design.  The blocks are fairly simple but combined it creates petals and flowers that flow over the quilt.  I also enjoyed working with the Moda Bella Solids and Quilters Dream cotton batting.

If you've ever thought about designing your own quilts or writing patterns the Modern Quilt Guild is an excellent avenue to get you started.  They are very supportive and everyone is so friendly and easy to work with.  I really encourage anyone debating about entering the world of pattern writing to give it a shot and submit a design or two to the MQG.

I hope everyone gets a chance to check out the Modern Monthly website and the patterns and other resources are free to MQG members.

  2. Lovely! Not sure I would have created that palette but I really like it! Thanks for the reminder about the monthly - I haven't really had a chance to check it out yet...

    1. Thanks! I wouldn't have picked that palette either but it was nice to have the challenge of working with someone else's color choices. I'm really pleased with how it all came together.

  3. This is such a pretty design, Heather. I didn't know you were asked to use a particular color combination. You made it work so beautiful. I keep wishing I could design, but wishing doesn't make it happen. :-) I'm so glad you're sharing your giftedness with all of us. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Cheryl. It was different for sure but it was nice to have the fabrics supplied by Moda and to have the MQG take the photos. I'm not a fabulous photographer so that was a great benefit for me.
