Infrastructure Week 4 - Row 3 & 5

Image
I hope everyone enjoyed week 3 and making some flying geese, then some more flying geese and oh yeah, some more.  With Christa's Fast Flying Geese method it really wasn't bad.  This week's sewing is super easy and will leave plenty of time to finish up row 2, if needed. There is also a SUPER exciting giveaway so don't forget to enter by leaving a comment, read on for more details. Infrastructure Row 3 Fabric This week we will be sewing rows 3 and 5.  Both are strip sets that span the width of the quilt.  I also want to mention that I switched to piecing with white Aurifil thread for row 5 and stuck with medium grey for row 3, both 50 wt. Infrastructure Row 5 Fabric If you're following along with Benartex Superior Solids please use colors, medium gray and gray for row 3 and turquoise, aqua and white for row 5. Infrastructure Rows 3 and 5 Cut After cutting for rows 3 and 5 you will have a set of strips.  When sewing long strips it's

Infrastructure Week 3 - Row 2

I hope everyone had a successful row 1 and picked up some good tips on fussy cutting and piecing techniques.  Week 3 is all about flying geese and more flying geese but thankfully Christa has included in a the pattern Fast Flying Geese instructions . ( To read more about Row 1 click here. ) Infrastructure - superior solids If you're following along with solids this week we're using Charcoal, Tomato Red, Tangerine and Squash.  Charcoal is the background and the color solids make the geese. Infrastructure Row 2 fabrics When you've completed the cutting instructions all the small squares will be in the dark grey and all the larger squares will be in the red and oranges. Infrastructure Row 2 Units After all the units are cut it's time to make some flying geese.  Christa has a detail tutorial on her blog for how to make Fast Flying Geese.   This was the first time I'd used this method to make geese and I'm hooked.  I love that there is mini

Infrastructure Week 2 - Row 1

Now that everyone has gotten their fabric picked out, or nearly picked out, it's time to start making the quilt.  I will be making the Infrastructure quilt using Banartex Superior Solids and sharing the slight modifications to the steps here.   Don't worry if you're still working of curating your fabrics for the quilt along several of the weeks are quick makes and leave time to catch up or work ahead. Infrastructure in Superior Solids I will be going over the cutting and piecing for Row 1.  If you would like to work ahead and cut out all the rows ahead of time that works too.  I do recommend cutting as you go for the solid version because the fabric differ from the instructions but it's not necessary.  If you are making your Infrastructure quilt with Geo Pop don't forget to check out Christa's post each week.  She will be posting additional construction tips for each row. Infrastructure Row 1 Fabric This first row uses Superior Solids Charcoal

How I Fared at the Fair

Image
Since 2015 I've been entering quilts in the Spokane Interstate Fair.  The first quilt I entered was my Paris Medallion quilt followed by many others with varying results: Mountain Scene , Scandinavian Pathways , Lost in Oz mini , Diamonds on Display , Modern Stepping Stones Mini .  This year I entered my Palm Fronds quilt and am very pleased with the results. Palm Fronds I finished this quilt over the summer and was so excited when my friend sent me a picture of my quilt at the fair with a special award ribbon!!  Fall has definitely come to Spokane and with the rainy weather I wasn't able to get the fair and check out my quilt until yesterday. Palm Fronds - Spokane Interstate Fair The Spokane Interstate Fair uses a Danish judging system so each quilt meeting a highest standard will get a blue ribbon, next highest red and next white and finally if the standard isn't met then no ribbon. Palm Fronds - Award Along with blue, red and white ribbons the f

Infrastructure Week 1

It's time, time to kick off our Infrastructure Quilt Along!  I'm really excited to be doing my first quilt along and even more excited that I am partnering with my good friend Christa Watson, christaquilts.com !  Week 1 will focus on design and fabric. Infrastructure - Solids I was completely thrilled when Christa asked me to design a quilt for her, then upcoming, fabric line Geo Pop.  She asked that I showcase all the fabrics and not to use any curves.  I presented a the infrastructure design in solids to her and she loved it.  We both use EQ .  I like to create my templates in EQ and Christa used the program to finalize the design by adding the actual prints to the design. Infrastructure - Final Design EQ did an amazing job creating the final design with the Geo Pop prints!  We also used EQ to create the templates for the diamond and anvil rows.  With the final design complete Christa and I decided that it would be great to feature both the Geo Pop a

Road Trip!

Image
I had some free time to design and make a quilt for the sake of making a quilt and here it is, my Road Trip quilt! Road Trip Quilt I didn't design this quilt with any specific inspiration but when I was done it instantly reminded me of looking out a car window and the 100's, in not 1000's, of hours I've spend in the car looking as the scenery pass by.  I initially wanted to name the quilt Relative Velocity and settled on Road Trip. Road Trip Quilt Almost every summer as a kid my family would take a road trip, usually with our tent trailer in tow.  We traveled all over the Pacific Northwest.  When I was a bit older we took trips as far north as Edmonton, Alberta and south to San Jose, CA.  After I graduated from high school my parents drove me to my sophomore year of college in Grove City, PA and after my senior year back home.  My mother and I drove up the east coast and home from Denver, Co.  Stephen and I drove from eastern PA home to Spokane and as r
