Infrastructure Week 1
It's time, time to kick off our Infrastructure Quilt Along! I'm really excited to be doing my first quilt along and even more excited that I am partnering with my good friend Christa Watson, christaquilts.com! Week 1 will focus on design and fabric.
Infrastructure - Solids |
I was completely thrilled when Christa asked me to design a quilt for her, then upcoming, fabric line Geo Pop. She asked that I showcase all the fabrics and not to use any curves. I presented a the infrastructure design in solids to her and she loved it. We both use EQ. I like to create my templates in EQ and Christa used the program to finalize the design by adding the actual prints to the design.
Infrastructure - Final Design |
EQ did an amazing job creating the final design with the Geo Pop prints! We also used EQ to create the templates for the diamond and anvil rows. With the final design complete Christa and I decided that it would be great to feature both the Geo Pop and Solids quilt options. I chose Benartex's Superior Solids of the project, please see my Aug 16th post on where to purchase these fabric online.
Infrastructure - Superior Solids |
Benartex Superior Solids are great to work with. Their soft, not heavy and the color saturation is amazing. After selecting Superior Solids I assigned the matching colors to the Geo Pop version of the Infrastructure quilt. Each week I will go over which Superior Solids are needed for that row and how to apply them to the design. For more specifics on which Superior Solids were used and fabric requirements check out my recent blog post. After deciding which fabrics you’ll use, be sure to tag us on instagram @christaquilts and @quiltachusetts and use the search hashtag #infrastructurequilt so everyone can see your choices and be encouraged and inspired along the way!!
Here is where we come to one of the great debates among quilters, to prewash or not to prewash, and even though I did not prewash my solids, gasp, I am a loyal Shout Color Catcher user. I also use All Free Clear detergent when I am washing my quilt to be blocked. Between the All and Color Catchers I haven't had any colors bleed so I'm trusting to my method. For information on prewashing fabrics, check out Christa's Infrastructure Week 1 blog post!
It's giveaway time! Our week 1 sponsor is Electric Quilt (EQ)! They have generously offered to give out a copy of their EQ 8 software!! EQ8 has been on my list for a while as I want to use it to design FPP blocks. It would be amazing to also use it to create mock ups of quilts I want to make so I can see if the prints mesh. This might allow my ocd self to use more than one line in a quilt. What a fun giveaway!! Xoxo
