A while back I was asked to design a modern quilt block for in collaboration with 14 other quilt designers for a modern sampler quilt, you can see my block, Sweet Pea, below. Now that you can sign up and receive the free blocks I wanted to share a little bit more about my inspiration.

We were all given the prompt, What is love?, and asked to design a block with no limitations other than a color palette. I instantly thought of many things I consider love, self sacrifice, obedience, kindness, patience, but after all that thinking I realized I was being too serious, it is a quilt block after all and not an essay, and decided to look for a more lighthearted inspiration.

One of my guilty pleasures is watching period movies of books I've read like Vanity Fair, any Jane Austen Novel or Charles Dickens. One of the ways characters in these stories share their feelings is by giving their love interest flowers, especially before a dance. These small flower arrangements are called Nosegays. I wanted to capture the feel of a small bouquet of flowers, one that would delight the recipient and one that would be full of color, with my sweet pea block.

This is a versatile block that makes a beautiful modern quilt all on it's own like I have laid out in the Wild Bouquet quilt above. It is also, a great block to mix and match with other quilt blocks for a more traditional look like the Nosegay quilt below. I'm going to be releasing the Nosegay quilt pattern latter this year. Since the Sweet Pea block is a free download you can get a head start on the blocks for this quilt.

Below is a mock I made with some of the test blocks. I'm so glad that my testers sent photos for their blocks so you could see what the block looks like in different color palettes and all together as a scrappy quilt.

Over the next couple weeks I'll be sharing more about the other designers and blocks in the What is Love? Free Modern Block Quilt Event but until then you can check out the blocks and get the free download of all 15 blocks HERE.

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." 1 John 4:7-11
