Modern Arrangement - APQ October 2019

I haven't done too much magazine publishing this year but back in January and February I made four quilts all due for publication, Banner Day-Curated Quilts, Petal Patch-MQG Modern Monthly, Follow the Leader-Modern by the Yard and lastly, Modern Arrangement-American Patchwork & Quilting!

This is my first time working with American Patchwork & Quilting magazine so I wanted to design a quilt that would introduce their readers to my style of design and quilting.  Most of my work carries an element of balance, depth and movement and Modern Arrangement has all three.

For the quilting I wanted to use a geometric design that draws your eye into the color intersections but at the same time gave interesting resting areas while looking at the design form a distance.  I accomplished both by using a point to point method and a broken glass motif in the circles.

For this project I used Paint Brush Studio's Painter Palette Solids, Aurifil thread and Warm and Natural cotton batting.  I love all these prducts.  Painter Palette Solids feel great and seem to fray less than other solids I've worked with.  I used Aurifil's longarm thread, forty3.  It's a 40wt 3 ply thread that my Gammill longarm loves and my go to batting is always Warm and Natural.

This is a super block for learning or practicing curves and would look amazing in prints and I hope you get a chance to pick up a copy of the October issue, or subscription, of American Patchwork & Quilting not only for my projects but all the great projects and articles in it.  Also, don't forget to follow American Patchwork & Quilting on Instagram ( @allpeoplequilt ) and catch a surprise at the end of September.

  1. It's truly (another) amazing design, Heather! I just don't know how your brain works, to keep coming up with such a wide variety of modern designs! I have a question though... Have you used Painter's Palette solid white in this quilt? If so, is there a reason you decided to use Warm 'n NATURAL versus Warm 'n White? I've personally found that a natural-colored batting "neutralizes" white fabric. Or perhaps you want that look? Just curious. Your quilt is stunning, and I'm thrilled for you to be working with AP&Q. Doris is a friend... and I used to work there too. :-)

    1. Thank you! Actually, I didn't use white. The background color is Mist, it's a light taupe and has a warm undertone. I almost never use a pure white in my projects especially since I really like warm colors. It was great working with APQ. I didn't have contact with Doris but maybe in the future.

    1. Oh I hope you do make it! When quilting this I used a warm grey/taupe so thread contrasts in many of the colors.

  4. I really love your designs, Heather! I purchased the magazine on Zinio so I could try this one out. I think I will use my Japanese blue and white prints for a different look. Can't wait to start!

    1. Thanks, the longarm helps. I know my walking foot really limited what I could do when it came to quilting.
