Infrastructure Week 12 - Binding
As you put the finishing touches on your Infrastructure quilt, or if your plugging along at your own comfortable pace, I hope you've enjoyed the quilt along and gleaned some new tips and tricks along the way.
Infrastructure Quilt |
This week we will be talking about binding. Christa has an amazing machine binding video tutorial over on her blog. When we began the quilt along the plan was for Christa to hand bind and for me to machine bind the quilt but in the course of making out quilts it ended up the exact opposite. So let me get into talking bindings!
60+ Quilts - 60+ Bindings |
I like to use 2 1/2" strips when binding and typically sew on the binding with a 3/8'' seam allowance. This mean, whenever possible, I leave a little, very little, extra batting around the edge of the my quilt when squaring it up, to keep all those points around the edges intact. After the binding is attached to the front of the quilt I will iron the binding back over itself all around the quilt. Then I flip the quilt over and iron the bind down on the back. This does two things, it keeps the binding in place better when sewing and it gives me a chance to iron my corners so that the miter lines up.
More Quilts - More Bindings |
After I press the binding I use wonder clips every 4 inches or so to hold the binding in place. After all the prep work is down it's time to hand sew. I really enjoying taking a moment to sit down and hand sew. It's a great personal touch on your quilt. There have been times when I had to bind 3 quilts right in a row and even though I'm carefully and have a thimble handy for any extra push the needle might need about the third quilt is when my fingers are telling me to machine bind, but hey isn't that what callouses are for?
Infrastructure binding |
While I'm binding I also take the time to catch any threads that I missed and still need snipped. It feels so good adding those final few stitches to your quilt and laying it out on the floor to see the whole quilt completely finished for the first time!
GIVEAWAY TIME! Aurifil Thread partnering with Christa and I again this week and donating an 2 cones of their Forty3 thread for our giveaway. I love their Forty3, 40wt-3ply, thread and would recommend it to everyone. They will be giving away two of my favorite colors, dove and light beige.

Thread is so important to the quilt and I love Aurifil. I have been incredibly lucky with your giveaways so I will try again.
ReplyDeleteI think turning the quilt over and ironing it down is a really good tip. So often, taking the extra time to press something one more time makes a huge difference--I sometimes resist, thinking I don't have time, but it pays off--sometimes in time saved, sometimes in reduced frustration, often in much better results.
ReplyDeleteWow, lots of quilts and
ReplyDeletegreat bindings. Love
the giveaway threads.

ReplyDeleteThank your for the opportunity----I love Aurifil thread!!
ReplyDeleteLove Aurifil! Thanks for the quilt-along.
ReplyDeleteI have done binding both by hand and machine and like both methods. My favorite is the faux flange binding. Love using Aurifil thread too.
ReplyDeleteI think that ironing the binding back is a great idea. I will try that on my next quilt. Thanks fir sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love Aurifil but have never used this particular weight. Thank you for the chance to win
ReplyDeleteI will have to try ironing my binding before sewing, I have never thought about doing that before. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI Love Aurifil thread. It works well in my machine and for hand work.
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful.
Great tip on ironing the binding over the back of the quilt. I really don't like handwork and bind everything by machine, unless it is a show quilt. I've been known to trade machine quilting for hand stitching the binding!! I love working with Aurifil threads, but I have never tried quilting on my longarm with them. These cones look like they would be a perfect opportunity to give that a try!
ReplyDeleteI think I'd have a really hard time trying to sew with a 3/8" seam allowance. One-fourth is hard enough.
ReplyDeleteI also find pressing the binding on both sides before sewing it down is the most efficient way to have a pleasing result when finished. And it is easier on the hands when done tis way. Love the videos for both machine and hand binding and love, love, love Aurifil thread my go to for all my sewing projects. judieharronatyahoodotcom
ReplyDeleteBinding the quilt is my least favorite part but at the same time it feels so good to be that close to finishing. Maybe when I get better at it I'll like it more
